RISK MANAGEMENT'

Risk is inherent in the project but can be managed through a process of ongoing identification, measurement and monitoring subject to risk limits and other controls. This process of risk management is critical to the success of the project. The project is exposed to various risks which are noted in the table below.

The Project Manager is responsible for the overall risk management approach and for approving risk strategies, principles, policies and procedures. The day to day adherence to risk principles is carried out by the households involved in the project.

Water Leaks

Plants affected

It is possible for a leak to create major problems for your property if not detected and fixed early

L

H

Ensure that farmers check for water leaks in the system at least once a week. However, high pressure systems are more likely to leak than low pressure systems.

Pest & Disease Control

(Pests includes insects, birds or other animals)

The hydroponics system provides a protected area that has lots of food for pest to live in. Pests can lead to poor results and frustration.

All plants share the same water the disease can spread very quickly and infect the other plants

M

H

It is recommended to put a mosquito net around the system to prevent pests from getting in; however, some pests may still get into the system. The best way to keep pests away is by keep looking for them. Every day the entire system should be inspected for any insects, caterpillars, slugs and snails. They like to hide in corners and on the bottom of leave. It is important to focus on prevention of pests rather than on the elimination.

After each crop is harvested, the system should be cleaned in order to keep the next crop of plants healthy. Starting with a clean system will help prevent disease and algae from being a problem. When no plants are being grown in the system, a mixture of bleach and water can be used to clean and disinfect the system. Gentle scrubbing can remove any build-up of algae or other material from the plastic sheeting in the hydroponic bed. After using any cleaning materials the system should be thoroughly rinsed and allowed to dry before new plants are to be grown.

Improper Methodology follow by households leading to losses

The skill and knowledge needed for operation is pertinent for successful farming.

7.

Failure due to loss of interest in the project by households and/ or project team

Project in jeopardy

L

H

The benefits from the project offer motivation for the households that participate in the project. They will gain savings in income and develop closer ties with other participants making a stronger community. The project manager will also encourage participants and provide assistance where necessary.
